ART OF THE IMAGE ‘19
a juried photographic media competition and exhibition

Art of the Image ‘19 is a juried photography competition and exhibition designed to celebrate the medium of photography and its cultural influence by engaging the photography community with a showing of exceptional photo-based works of art.  This exhibition is open to artists working in two and three-dimensional mediums over the age of 18. Any original work of art with a primary focus on the photographic medium, utilizing traditional and non-traditional processes, will be considered for the selection process. Awards and Honorable Mentions will be available to selected artists. This year’s juror is Beth Handler Riebe, PhD, Independent Curator and Art Consultant.

Art of the Image ‘19 will be installed and exhibited at Gallery Verrazzano, a 7200+ sq.ft., gallery and event space located in theArtWorks™ of Wilmington, NC, near downtown.  Gallery Verrazzano is a brand new home for visual and performing arts.

Art of the Image ’19 is organized by Art in Bloom Gallery and theArtWorks™.


JUROR: Beth Handler Riebe, PhD, Independent Curator and Art Consultant 

Beth Handler Riebe worked in the NYC art world for twenty years, with curatorial stints at The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Paula Cooper Gallery. She served as an art consultant to Donald B. Marron (one of ARTnews’ top 200 collectors). Beth received a BA from Oberlin College, and an MA and a PhD from Yale University, with all three degrees in art history. She is a former Trustee of the Cameron Art Museum and occasionally teaches art history at UNCW.

Handler Riebe founded LOCAL: art + ideas in 2013 in Wilmington, NC.  LOCAL is a think tank that supports art and ideas flourishing BEYOND larger metropolitan areas and cultural networks.  It promotes regional artists and introduces their work to new audiences nearby and nationally through a variety of programming, including private art viewings, site-specific installations, and temporary and online exhibitions.

PROSPECTUS

  1. ELIGIBILITY

Open to all photographers and artists submitting original photography and/or works of art.  Any original work of with a primary focus on the photographic medium will be considered for the selection process.   Works of art that will be considered can be created through the use of traditional photography, non-traditional photography (including a variety of alternative processes), altered photography, digital artwork (utilizing photography), mixed media (utilizing photography), and installation works.  There are no size or weight limitations for entries. This exhibition is open to visual artists working in two and three-dimensional media over the age of 18.

  1. ENTRIES AND FEES

Each artist is allowed to enter as many entries as they wish. Entries to the competition must have been created within the last three (3) years. The non-refundable entry fee for Art of the Image ‘19 is $20 for two (2) entries and $5 for each additional entry. All entries will be accepted via EntryThingy  on Art in Bloom Gallery’s (AIB Gallery) website and paid for through PayPal.   

  1. ENTRY SUBMISSIONS

Art of the Image ‘19 only accepts digital entries through EntryThingy (An art competition online submission system).  There is a portal posted on AIB Gallery’s website.  Images must be JPEG, JPG or PNG files, under 5MB and 1200 pixels or larger on the longest side. E-mailed images, CDs or in person submissions will not be accepted for this competition.

  1. NOTICE OF LIABILITY & INSURANCE

All reasonable care and precaution will be taken in the handling, storing, and installation of materials and works submitted for this competition. AIB Gallery will provide insurance for the works of art for the duration of the object’s stay at Verrazzano Gallery, provided that artist has completed ALL appropriate paperwork supplied by the staff of the AIB Gallery. Insurance will not cover damage to the artwork due to poor construction or craftspersonship or poor transportation or shipping methods. Participation in the entry process constitutes understanding and acceptance of the conditions set forth above.

AIB Gallery and theArtWorks™ reserve the right to photograph any submitted work for printed and digital publicity and other promotional use, website for online sale and archival purposes.

  1. PREPARATION OF SELECTED WORKS

The juror will determine the final number of works selected for exhibition during the selection process, however the exhibition should feature approximately 100-250 works of art. Works will be exhibited in Gallery Verrazzano, at theArtWorks™ located at 200 Willard Street, Wilmington, NC 28401.  All accepted works must be framed and ready to hang.*

The following is a general list of guidelines and requirements that must be met before artwork will be accepted:

    • Gallery Ready is a term used to describe artwork that is prepared to be received.
    • Preparation and framing is the responsibility of the artist.
    • All original works of art must be in excellent condition.
    • All original works of art must include a visible signature (front and/or back where applicable).
    • All original works of art must be clearly and professionally labeled on the back of the piece. Labeling provides necessary identification and provenance to a work of art. Include the following information:
        • Artist Name
        • Phone Number and E-Mail Address
        • Title
        • Date of Creation
        • Media, Size (“H x “W x “D)
        • Price
    • Framing choices must be complementary to the artwork and be consistent in style.* (It is best to frame and mat works in a simple and professional manner appropriate to the materials and artistic style.) Works of art must be wired and ready-to-hang. Wires must be new, suitable for the weight of the work and free from fraying and rust.  We will not accept poor or outdated framing.
    • Works of art that do not meet general guidelines for exhibit may not be included in the exhibit.
    • When works are accepted into the competition, we will provide additional framing suggestions and a label template.

* Please contact Brook or Dave with inquiries regarding works that may have special framing and/or hanging requirements. You may also add notes directly into submission system where indicated, along with alternate views where necessary.  Entries will not be disqualified should the work have special installation requirements or alternative framing. Please note that there are no size or weight limitations.

  1. DELIVERY & SHIPPING OF SELECTED WORKS

The artist is responsible for the hand-delivery and/or shipping (plus return shipping) costs.  Works must arrive by July 28th, 2019.

    • HAND-DELIVERED WORKS will be accepted at Art in Bloom Gallery located at 210 Princess Street in Wilmington, NC 28401 during open hours Tuesday-Saturday 10am-6pm, Sunday Noon – 5pm during the acceptance dates of July 15th – 28th, 2019.
    • SHIPPED WORKS may be shipped directly to theArtWorks™. Works must arrive by July 28th, 2019. Works may be shipped via UPS, Federal Express, Commercial Carrier or US Mail.

  1. RETURN DELIVERY & PICK UP OF ART

Following the exhibit, works will be returned in the manner in which they were delivered/shipped, unless the work is sold. Works will not be returned before the end of the exhibition. All original packing materials will be reused for return shipping.

    • Works will be available for pickup on September 17th – 19th from 10am until 5pm at theArtWorks™.
    • Works that will be shipped, will be prepared and shipped by September 20th. Return shipping can be arranged prior to shipping work OR during the exhibition time period.
    • Exhibited works of art that are not picked up by September 19th, 2019 will be subject to a $5 per day storage fee. After 30 days, the works of art will be considered abandoned and will become property of AIB Gallery and theArtWorks™.
  1. SALES

All sales will be handled by Art in Bloom Gallery staff and are subject to 50% gallery commission. Artist will determine sale price. AIB Gallery will process all sales, as well as collect and manage all applicable sales tax.

    • Works of art must be for sale during the competition and exhibition.
    • Sale price will remain unchanged during the exhibition.
    • In case of sales, the artist will be notified as soon as possible and will be paid within 30 of the close of the exhibit.
    • The works of art will be made available for sale in the exhibition as well as online via the AIB Gallery Website.
    • Sold work must remain in the gallery for the duration of the exhibition.
    • The pick up or shipping of the piece to the buyer will be at the buyer’s discretion and expense.
  1. PARTICIPANT AWARDS

There will be multiple awards given to selected artists by the Juror. The Juror will determine her 1st, 2nd & 3rd Choice Awards as well as Honorable Mentions. Additionally, there will be a People’s Choice Award.  Awards will be announced during the Special Reception/Gallery Talk on Friday, August 2nd

AIB Gallery and theArtWorks™ will provide advertising for the exhibition, all gallery materials (signage, labels and price lists) two special receptions during the exhibit, Juror’s Talk, professional gallery staffing, online sales, as well as, a virtual walk through of the gallery and exhibition.
