WORKSHOPS
ABC’s of Acrylic – For the Beginning PainterStudents will bring their own supplies to class
Acrylic paint is one of the most forgiving and versatile mediums, and the results can be bright, bold, Impressionistic, abstract…it really wears many hats. With a focus on the still life, students will become familiar with the brushes, surfaces and “feel” of working with heavy-body acrylic paint. Our subjects, still lifes. These three sessions offer fundamentals, fun techniques and exercises to build confidence, along with plenty of instructor demos, handouts and fun historical insights.
Level: For beginners
Materials Needed:
Small sketchbook/notebook for takiing notes, quick warmup sketches.
Fine liner sketch pen – Sharpie extra fine liner pen in black works great.
Paint tubes of Heavy Body Acrylic in the following colors:
• Titanium White
• Cadmium Yellow Medium
• Cadmium Yellow Light (Lemon Yellow)
• Cerulean Blue
• Ultramarine Blue
• Quinacridone Magenta
• Cadmium Red Medium
• Burnt Umber.
BRANDS: Liquitex Basics, Golden, regular Liquitex in white tubes, or Michael’s or Hobby Hobby’s own brand of tube acrylic are all options.
NOTE: Small sets don’t always have these colors. Please no craft acrylic paint.
Surfaces: Packs of canvas boards in square 8″ x 8″ or 12″ x 12″ or 8″ x 10″ are great for our purpose. No need to buy stretched canvas. A 100% Cotton Canvas pad of canvas sheets is also viable for taping off different sizes, economical. Craft stores typically carry, 10 sheets per pad.
Brushes: I will have plenty of brushes on hand to try, but with acrylic, we only use synthetic, and never use watercolor or our oil paint brushes with acrylic.
I recommend a couple “brights” (flat, squared off bristle style and one or two “filberts,” flat with rounded end, in 1/4”, 1/2” and 3/4” widths. Refrain from using tiny brushes! The craft stores mark brushes that can be used with acrylic, purchased individually or often sets of 5 or 6. You are welcome to try out my brushes first before purchasing, as brushes can be challenging to distinguish what’s what.
Palette: I recommend a disposable palette pad, found in the paper section of the craft stores. No plastic palettes, as the acrylic paint dries and it just has to be tossed.
