WORKSHOPS
Adding Depth: Watercolor with Gouache & Toned PaperHow about incorporating new media into your drawing and paintings? This class, taught by mixed media artist, David Norris, combines watercolor with gouache and colored pencil using a technique inspired by 19th century artists. Beginning with a mid-tone wash to your watercolor paper gives a quick start to a vivid painting. Playing against the medium-toned background, dark colors and marks recede into the background, while white gouache, color pencil, or bright watercolor seem to jump out in front.
The toned wash also can allow a minimalist approach, with only quick touches of line and color being necessary. The background tone has a way of filling in, and making the painting look “complete”, creating a harmony of color by lending the background tint to the overlying paints.
This class is for students at all levels.
