“Transference: New Art by Joan McLoughlin” is an exhibit featuring new paintings by the Wilmington based artist. Join us for the opening reception (NEW DATE) on Friday, September 13th from 6-9pm to meet the artist, to hear about her artistic journey, and to enjoy refreshments and live music by violinist, Shirley Lebo. The art exhibit continues through October 6, 2019.  Art in Bloom Gallery is open until 9 pm on Fourth Friday Gallery Nights including September 27th.

This body of work includes abstract paintings as well as a new direction using photo transfers incorporated into the compositions.  This new series has evolved in order to evoke nostalgia by illustrating memories of the past alongside the contemporary art of the present.

Joan McLoughlin, is a contemporary painter currently working in acrylics.  Her abstract paintings are expressive and imaginative with vibrant, lush use of color.  She begins with a chaotic canvas, freely painted, with no deliberate plan.  She then reins it in, forming composition,  shapes and sometimes recognizable organic images, applying artistic principles as needed. Joan says “I try to achieve a balance between chaos and control.  I am, by nature, a very structured, by-the-rules, perfectionist type.  Art gives me the opportunity to be bold, confident and spontaneous.”  The joy of painting is evident in her work.

Joan was born and raised in New York.  After earning a BFA degree majoring in studio art and photography at Notre Dame of Maryland University in 2000, she exhibited and sold her art in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC.  She now lives and paints in Wilmington, NC exhibiting locally in solo and group shows.  You can see her art at Art in Bloom Gallery, Eclipse Artisan Boutique, the Wilson Center CFCC, as well as at her home studio.
